Handwriting

A sentence appears in joined-up handwriting and children write it with a finger or the board pen on notebook lines, with a gold baseline and a red margin. When they press Done, the game compares the writing with the model and gives a score and stars, with bars showing what went wrong. It doesn't read the words: it measures shape, size, line and spacing.

What children practise

Levels and settings

Short sentences

For Y1, such as I like cats or The frog jumps.

Medium sentences

For Y2 and Y3, such as The cat sleeps on the sofa.

Long sentences

For Y4 to Y6, such as Bees make honey in the hive.

Trace over

The model appears in grey on the lines to trace over. The starting mode in Y1 and Y2.

Copy below

The model appears above, smaller, and is copied onto the lines. From Y3.

Strictness

Gentle, Normal or Strict: by default, Gentle in Y1-Y2, Normal in Y3-Y4 and Strict in Y5-Y6.

How to play it in class

  1. Choose the mode, Trace over or Copy below, and short, medium or long sentences.
  2. Choose 3, 5 or 8 rounds and, if you like, a time limit per sentence: 1 or 2 minutes.
  3. Write with a finger or the pen; Undo and Delete fix mistakes, and Done asks for the score.
  4. In teams, both write the same sentence in their half and the round goes to the higher score; on your own, the end screen shows the stars from every round.

Ways to play

In teams, at the same time

The screen splits in two and each team plays on its own half at the same time.

For one player

One child plays on the whole screen at their own pace: on the whiteboard, a computer or a tablet.

Which handwriting style is the model?
